Eric Swalwell Resigns From Congress Amid Mounting Sexual Misconduct Allegations
Eric Swalwell announced Monday that he will resign from Congress, marking a dramatic end to his political career following a wave of serious sexual misconduct allegations.
In a public statement, Swalwell apologized for what he described as “mistakes in judgment,” while continuing to deny the most serious accusations against him. He said he would “fight the serious, false allegation made against me,” even as he acknowledged that the controversy had made it difficult for him to serve effectively.

The resignation comes just one day after Swalwell suspended his campaign for governor of California, where he had previously been considered a leading Democratic contender. His rapid political collapse followed the emergence of accusations from multiple women, including at least one allegation of rape involving a former staffer.
Swalwell pointed to growing pressure in Congress, where some lawmakers had begun discussing potential expulsion proceedings. While he criticized the idea of removal without due process, he ultimately concluded that stepping down was necessary to avoid distracting from his responsibilities to constituents.
The allegations have triggered a broader fallout, including the withdrawal of endorsements from political allies and the departure of key staff members. Several Democratic figures also publicly called for Swalwell to step aside in the wake of the reports.
In addition to the political consequences, Swalwell is facing a criminal investigation. The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office has launched a probe into at least one of the allegations, adding legal stakes to the already escalating situation.
Swalwell said he will work to ensure a smooth transition for his office and continued service for constituents as he prepares to leave Congress.
