Ex-Girlfriend Accuses Maine Senate Candidate Graham Platner Of Rape
Maine Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner is facing a new and serious allegation after a former girlfriend accused him of raping her during an incident in 2021, claiming he entered her home uninvited while intoxicated and ignored her repeated refusals.
Jenny Racicot told reporters that she had explicitly told Platner not to come to her home but said he arrived anyway, entered through an unlocked door, and allegedly forced himself on her. She said Platner was “very drunk and wouldn’t take no for an answer,” describing the encounter as nonconsensual. Racicot said she later confided in her therapist, friends, and a subsequent partner about the alleged assault, providing those communications as corroboration.
Platner has categorically denied the accusation, calling it “troubling, serious, and false.” In a video statement, he maintained his innocence but acknowledged the political impact of the allegation, saying he is taking time to consider the future of his Senate campaign.
The allegation adds to a growing list of controversies surrounding Platner’s campaign. Previous reports included claims from several former girlfriends alleging abusive behavior, misogynistic comments, and other misconduct, all of which have intensified scrutiny of the Democratic nominee.
The political fallout was swift. Representative Ro Khanna, who had previously endorsed Platner, withdrew his support and called on the candidate to end his Senate campaign, saying the new allegation is both serious and credible. Other Democrats have also urged Platner to step aside as the party weighs its options ahead of a key deadline for replacing its nominee.
Under Maine election law, Democrats have until July 13 to replace Platner on the ballot if he withdraws from the race. The contest against Republican Senator Susan Collins is considered one of the most competitive Senate races in the country, making the controversy especially significant for both parties.
