Fetterman Says He’s Proud To Be The Democratic Party’s “Conscience” On Israel During Netanyahu Meeting
Sen. John Fetterman declared that he is “proud” to serve as the “conscience of the Democratic Party” on Israel during a private meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, reaffirming his unwavering support for America’s closest ally in the Middle East despite increasing opposition from many within his own party.
The Pennsylvania Democrat met one-on-one with Netanyahu at Blair House in Washington, where the two discussed the U.S.-Israel alliance, regional security, and the ongoing conflict with Hamas. During the meeting, Fetterman praised Israel’s military campaign and stressed that his support for the Jewish state has remained consistent throughout his time in the Senate.
“I’m proud to remain the conscience of the Democratic Party in Congress,” Fetterman said, adding that he has consistently backed Israel’s efforts against Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iran. He described Israel’s military actions as a “just war” and emphasized that standing with Israel has become one of the defining principles of his Senate career.
Fetterman also criticized what he described as his party’s increasingly hostile attitude toward Israel. He expressed disappointment with fellow Democrats over their rhetoric and pointed specifically to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, calling him “worthless” over comments suggesting Netanyahu should be arrested if he visits New York.
Netanyahu praised Fetterman for refusing to bow to political pressure, telling the senator that history would remember his willingness to defend Israel when it was unpopular within his own party. The Israeli leader thanked Fetterman for what he described as his courage and steadfast commitment to the U.S.-Israel alliance.
The meeting underscores Fetterman’s growing break with many Democrats on foreign policy. While he has repeatedly rejected calls to leave the Democratic Party, he has continued to criticize the party’s left flank over Israel and has become one of the Senate’s most outspoken Democratic supporters of the U.S.-Israel relationship.
