Google Maps Officially Changes Lake Ontario to ‘Lake America’ for U.S. Users

Google Maps has officially changed Lake Ontario to “Lake America” for users in the United States, following President Donald Trump’s executive order renaming the Great Lake amid an escalating trade dispute with Canada.

The change began rolling out after the U.S. Geographic Names Information System formally updated its records to reflect Trump’s new designation. Google routinely relies on official government databases when determining how geographic locations appear on its mapping service.

Americans opening Google Maps will now see the body of water labeled “Lake America.” Canadian users will continue seeing the traditional Lake Ontario name, while people elsewhere in the world will generally see both names displayed.

Google said the decision follows its longstanding policy for geographic features whose official names differ between countries. The company previously took a similar approach after Trump renamed the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America” for U.S. federal purposes.

Trump signed the Lake America executive order Thursday after initially floating the change as tensions between Washington and Ottawa intensified. The lake sits between New York and the Canadian province of Ontario and is the smallest of the five Great Lakes.

The president has accused Canada of taking advantage of the United States through unfair trade arrangements while benefiting heavily from American economic and military power. His administration has imposed steep tariffs on several Canadian products after negotiations between the two countries failed to produce a broader agreement.

Canada has retaliated with tariffs of its own, turning what was once one of America’s most stable trading relationships into an increasingly bitter economic confrontation.

Trump’s executive order does not force Canada to change the lake’s name. The federal action only establishes Lake America as the official designation used by the United States government and federal agencies.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney immediately rejected the change and insisted the body of water would remain Lake Ontario in Canada. He pointed to the centuries-old history of the name and its Indigenous origins while criticizing Trump’s decision.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford has also refused to recognize the new designation. Ford unveiled a large bilingual sign declaring “Lake Ontario: Now and Always” and said the rest of the world would continue using the traditional name regardless of Trump’s executive order.

Opposition has also emerged inside the United States. New York Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul said her state would continue calling it Lake Ontario, while Republican Vermont Gov. Phil Scott criticized Trump’s decision as unnecessary.

Google, however, has chosen to follow the federal government’s official geographic database rather than join the political fight over which name should be used. That means millions of Americans using one of the world’s most popular mapping services will now see Lake America on their screens.

Other mapping companies have responded differently. Apple Maps was still displaying Lake Ontario for American users as of Sunday, while MapQuest publicly announced that it had no intention of changing the name.

The split demonstrates the unusual situation created by Trump’s order. Private mapping companies are not legally required to adopt federal geographic names, but many traditionally rely on government databases to maintain consistent location information.

The White House quickly celebrated Google’s decision. Trump administration officials highlighted screenshots showing Lake America appearing on Google Maps as evidence that the president’s new designation was already becoming part of everyday American usage.

Whether the name eventually gains broader international acceptance remains uncertain. But just days after Trump signed the executive order, one of the biggest mapping platforms in the world has made the switch — and for Google Maps users across the United States, Lake America is now officially on the map.
