Hillary Clinton Avoids Endorsing Scandal-Plagued Maine Democrat, Calls Controversies ‘Bumps On The Road’
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton declined to directly endorse Maine Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner on Monday, sidestepping questions about the embattled nominee while appearing to downplay his mounting controversies.
Speaking during an appearance at 92NY, Clinton was asked whether she supported Platner’s candidacy. Instead of offering a clear endorsement, she said she wanted to see what kind of candidate he ultimately becomes.
“I feel about him the way I feel about any candidate,” Clinton said. “I want to see what kind of candidate he actually turns out to be.”
During her remarks, Clinton appeared to characterize Platner’s scandals as “bumps on the road,” prompting skepticism from interviewer David Remnick of The New Yorker.
“The bumps on the road that he has experienced and some of the things he has said…” Clinton began.
“Bumps on the road?” Remnick interjected.
“Yeah, clearly bumps on the road in terms of his prior behavior, some of his prior statements,” Clinton responded. She also noted that incumbent Sen. Susan Collins would be difficult to defeat, saying the race would be “a tough election.”
When pressed further and asked how she would vote if she lived in Maine, Clinton declined to answer directly.
“I’m not a Mainer. I’m a New Yorker,” she joked.
Clinton then pivoted away from Platner and instead focused on the Democratic Party’s broader political goals, discussing the importance of regaining control of the House of Representatives in the 2026 elections.
Platner’s campaign has been dogged by a series of controversies since he entered the race. Reports have highlighted allegations involving sexually explicit messages to women, offensive social media posts, a tattoo linked to Nazi imagery, and turmoil among campaign staff.
The scrutiny intensified earlier this month after a New York Times report detailed new allegations involving violent incidents and troubling behavior with former girlfriends.
Despite the controversies, several Democratic figures have continued to stand by Platner’s candidacy, while others have declined to publicly disavow him. Clinton’s comments appeared to place her in the latter camp, avoiding a full endorsement while stopping short of condemning his campaign outright.
