Homan Clashes With Catholic Leaders Over Immigration Enforcement
Tom Homan sharply criticized senior Catholic leaders after they voiced opposition to the Trump administration’s immigration policies, escalating tensions between federal officials and the Church.
Speaking in response to comments from prominent clergy, Homan argued that religious leaders should not weigh in on immigration enforcement, saying they lack firsthand experience with the realities at the border. He pointed to his decades in law enforcement, describing encounters with human trafficking and migrant deaths as shaping his views on the issue.
Border czar Tom Homan, to question on Trump feud with Pope Leo XIV: “I’m speaking for myself, a lifelong Catholic. I wish they’d stay out of immigration…If they understood the atrocities that happen on an open border, I think their opinion would change.” pic.twitter.com/ZKVgKmy96D

The remarks followed a televised segment featuring Blase Cupich, Robert McElroy, and Joseph Tobin. The cardinals raised concerns about the impact of immigration enforcement on communities, with Tobin criticizing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and others warning about fear among immigrant populations.
Church leaders also questioned broader policy effects, including deportations of long-term residents and declining attendance at Spanish-language Masses. Some framed their concerns in moral and humanitarian terms, emphasizing the treatment of migrants and families.
Homan pushed back, arguing that stricter enforcement helps reduce crime and disrupt trafficking networks. He maintained that securing the border ultimately protects vulnerable individuals and saves lives.
The disagreement extends beyond U.S. borders. Pope Leo XIV has previously expressed concern about immigration policies that broadly associate illegal status with criminality, adding another layer to the ongoing debate.
The exchange highlights a growing divide between government officials focused on enforcement and religious leaders emphasizing humanitarian considerations, as immigration remains a central and contentious national issue.
It’s fascinating to see what social media reveals about a person before they become the Pope.
