Rep. Jasmine Crockett is facing backlash after publicly suggesting the attack at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner may have been “fake,” before later issuing a more conventional condemnation of political violence.
In a post on her Threads account just hours after the shooting, Crockett questioned how many assassination attempts could be tied to one president and floated multiple explanations. “Maybe it’s lax gun laws, maybe it’s lack of mental health funding, or maybe it’s fake… who knows,” she wrote.
The comments came shortly after law enforcement detained a suspect who rushed a security checkpoint at the Washington Hilton armed with multiple weapons. The man, identified by authorities as Cole Tomas Allen, was stopped by Secret Service agents before reaching the ballroom where President Donald Trump and top officials were gathered.
Crockett later took a different tone on her official X account, stating that political violence is unacceptable and expressing relief that attendees were safe. The shift in messaging has drawn attention as critics point to the contrast between her initial speculation and subsequent statement.
According to investigators, evidence suggests the attack was planned in advance. Federal filings describe communications allegedly sent by Allen outlining his intent to target Trump administration officials, along with details about how he prioritized potential targets.
Authorities say Allen traveled across the country in the days leading up to the event, eventually arriving in Washington, D.C., where he checked into the same hotel hosting the correspondents’ dinner. He was reportedly armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives when he attempted to force his way through security.
The case is now being handled by the U.S. Department of Justice with support from the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Prosecutors have filed charges related to firearms offenses and attempted violence, and additional charges could follow as the investigation develops.
