JD Vance Says He Has ‘No Doubt’ Trump Will Support Whatever He Decides About 2028
Vice President JD Vance said President Trump would be supportive of whatever decision he ultimately makes about a potential 2028 presidential run, while revealing that the president enjoys discussing future political scenarios.
“I never bring it up. But sure, the president brings it up a lot of stuff, sometimes publicly, sometimes privately,” Vance said during an interview on “CBS Sunday Morning.”
“The president’s a political animal. He loves this stuff. He’s fascinated by it,” the vice president continued. “It’s not coy, or it’s not positive or negative. He kind of talks about it like, ‘What’s going to happen?’”
Vance has repeatedly downplayed speculation about a White House bid and has maintained that he does not intend to make any decisions about his political future until after the 2026 midterm elections.
Despite Vance’s reluctance to discuss the subject, Trump has occasionally raised the issue in public, at one point jokingly asking supporters whether they preferred Vance or Secretary of State Marco Rubio as the Republican nominee in 2028.
“Who likes JD Vance? Who likes Marco Rubio?” Trump asked during an event last month.
“All right. Sounds like a good ticket,” he added.
Rubio has publicly ruled out seeking the Republican nomination if Vance enters the race, while Trump has not publicly indicated a preference between the two men.
“I have no doubt that the president of the United States is going to be very supportive of anything that I ultimately decide to do,” Vance said. “But we really just haven’t talked about what that thing will be.”
Vance again stressed that any decision about his political future will come after the midterms.
“Usha and I will absolutely sit down and talk about what comes next for our family,” Vance explained. “The way I make decisions is, I try not to make them until I absolutely must.”
The interview came as Vance promoted his second memoir, “Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith,” which is scheduled to be released Tuesday.
During the discussion, second lady Usha Vance shared that the murder of Charlie Kirk played a role in prompting conversations about having a fourth child.
“I think it really heightened JD’s sense that he’d been talking about this for a while, this sense that there was this possibility of having another kid whom he could love as much as the three that we had,” she said.
“And it really did crystallize for him, that sense that if you could have that other child, then you would have nothing to regret,” she added. “And if we couldn’t have that other child, then we were very happy with the children that we had. So, it was very powerful, what Erika said about her own family.”
