Jill Biden’s Ex-Husband Accused Of Murdering His Wife
The ex-husband of former First Lady Jill Biden has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of his wife at their Delaware home. Authorities in New Castle County announced the arrest of 77-year-old William Stevenson on Tuesday following a weeks-long investigation into the December death of 64-year-old Linda Stevenson.
William Stevenson was previously married to Jill Biden from 1970 to 1975 before their divorce. Police responded to a domestic dispute call on December 28 at the couple’s residence in the Oak Hill neighborhood of Wilmington. When officers arrived, they found Linda Stevenson unresponsive in the living room. Despite immediate life-saving efforts, she was pronounced dead shortly afterward.
“Upon entering the home, officers located 64-year-old Linda Stevenson unresponsive in the living room. Officers immediately administered life-saving measures; however, despite their efforts, Linda Stevenson was later pronounced deceased,” New Castle County Police said in their statement.
An autopsy was conducted by the Delaware Division of Forensic Science, but the cause of death has not yet been made public. Stevenson was arrested following a grand jury indictment and is currently being held at the Howard Young Correctional Institution after failing to post $500,000 cash bail.
Linda Stevenson’s obituary described her death as unexpected and omitted any mention of her husband. It remembered her as a devoted mother and grandmother who loved family vacations and took pride in her work and personal relationships.
Jill Biden first met William Stevenson while attending the University of Delaware in 1969. Their marriage ended in 1975, the same year she met then-Senator Joe Biden. She married Biden two years later, in 1977. In her memoir, Jill Biden described her first marriage as a youthful mistake, writing, “I truly believed we were destined for each other.”
William Stevenson gained some regional prominence as the founder of the Stone Balloon, a Newark, Delaware nightclub that hosted major acts including Bruce Springsteen in the 1970s. His arrest and the surrounding allegations have now drawn renewed national attention.
