Joe Scarborough Blasts Democrats for Tolerating ‘Unhinged Lefties,’ Says Party Is ‘Too Woke to Call Out the Obvious’

MS NOW host Joe Scarborough tore into the Democratic Party on Monday, accusing its leaders of refusing to confront radical voices on the far left and warning that the same political mistakes that hurt Democrats in 2024 could cost them again.

Scarborough launched into the criticism after watching Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez discuss Wisconsin Democratic gubernatorial candidate Francesca Hong. Hong has previously supported controversial positions including abolishing police and prisons, prompting questions about why Ocasio-Cortez had declined to endorse her.

Ocasio-Cortez argued that Hong had moved away from many of her previous positions and referenced a New York City councilman’s description of an earlier version of progressive politics as “Woke 1.” Scarborough was unimpressed, arguing Democrats continue searching for ways to avoid directly condemning ideas that most voters consider extreme.

Scarborough stressed that his criticism was not simply an attack on every democratic socialist. He even praised New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani as pragmatic in some areas, pointing to the city’s economy and declining murder rate while arguing that other figures associated with the Democratic Socialists of America have embraced rhetoric far outside the political mainstream.

He specifically criticized activists who participated in pro-Hamas demonstrations following the Oct. 7 terrorist attack on Israel. Scarborough argued that Democrats should have no difficulty condemning rhetoric that minimizes atrocities against Israelis or crosses into hate speech, regardless of disagreements over health care, taxes or other progressive economic policies.

Scarborough also pointed back to the 2024 presidential election, arguing Democrats allowed Republicans to dominate culturally divisive issues. He recalled the widespread campaign advertising highlighting Kamala Harris’ past support for taxpayer-funded gender-transition procedures for federal prisoners and argued that those messages helped President Trump with working-class male voters.

The longtime political commentator said Democrats could instead emphasize economic issues that have broader public appeal, including raising taxes on billionaires and pursuing health care reform. But he warned that such an agenda will not protect the party politically if Democratic leaders remain unwilling to distance themselves from extreme rhetoric coming from their own side.

Scarborough then singled out Ocasio-Cortez and Democratic congressional leaders, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. He argued they should plainly condemn extreme positions rather than attempting to explain them away or avoid politically uncomfortable confrontations with the party’s activist base.

He accused Democrats of being “too woke to call out the obvious,” comparing their current predicament to a football team fumbling just before reaching the end zone. Scarborough said the party has opportunities to make significant political gains but risks throwing them away by refusing to acknowledge positions that mainstream Americans overwhelmingly reject.

Scarborough concluded by warning that the pattern increasingly resembles what happened before Trump’s 2024 victory. In his view, Democrats had an election they could have won but repeatedly undermined themselves, and he fears the party is once again allowing its most radical voices to become an unnecessary political liability.
