Joy Behar: Democracy Suddenly Stopped ‘Working’ When Trump Took Office
Joy Behar said Friday that democracy simply stopped “working” the moment President Donald Trump returned to the Oval Office after his 2024 election victory.
Discussing new polling showing that most Americans believe the U.S. is in a political crisis, Behar declared that the system was functioning fine under former Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden — and that Trump was to blame for its collapse.
“So if you’re worried about where the country is heading, you’re not alone,” Behar said on The View. “Seventy-nine percent of American voters think that the U.S. is in a state of political crisis, and more than half think democracy isn’t working. It’s funny, under Obama and Biden it was working. All of a sudden it’s not working. Gee, what happened?!”
Her cohost Alyssa Farah Griffin pushed back, suggesting Behar was misinterpreting the poll. Behar doubled down: “I know but I’m saying it! I’m saying that!”

Ana Navarro chimed in, arguing that Trump’s 2024 reelection only happened because voters had “forgotten how bad Trump was” during his four years out of office. “If someone was running now against Trump when people have been painfully reminded of what an authoritarian he is, it would be very different,” Navarro claimed.
She went further, accusing Trump of breaking the checks and balances system altogether — and lamented that federal district court rulings against him lacked “teeth” to rein him in.
The panel’s conversation is the latest in a string of on-air tirades against Trump since his return to office, as The View continues to position itself as a daily sounding board for liberal outrage.
