Minnesota is reeling after two state lawmakers and their spouses were ambushed in what authorities are calling a coordinated, politically motivated attack.
Former State House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband were found shot to death in their Brooklyn Park home. Just hours earlier, State Senator John Hoffman and his wife were also shot in their home in Champlin. Both survived the assault and are currently in stable condition following emergency surgery.
Law enforcement sources say the gunman wore tactical gear, drove a vehicle with flashing police-style lights, and posed as a law enforcement officer to gain access. Authorities confirmed the attacker was carrying what appeared to be a hit list of elected officials, along with a manifesto espousing anti-government rhetoric.
Governor Tim Walz condemned the shootings as a “political assassination attempt,” ordering a full mobilization of state and federal resources. Residents in both cities were briefly told to shelter in place as a manhunt unfolded across the Twin Cities metro area.
The attacks come amid growing national concern over politically inspired violence. Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords—herself a survivor of a targeted shooting—called the incident “an assault not just on individuals, but on the very idea of civil governance.”
Security has been increased for multiple Minnesota lawmakers as the investigation continues. Officials say the shooter remains at large, and the potential for further violence cannot be ruled out.
