Melania Trump Laughs Off ‘Disappearance’ Reports With ‘I Heard You Missed Me’ Return to White House

First lady Melania Trump made a lighthearted return to the public spotlight Thursday, laughing off speculation about her recent absence as she appeared alongside President Trump at a White House event.

“I heard you missed me,” Melania joked while addressing the audience in the Rose Garden. “Here I am.” Her remarks drew laughter and applause and marked her first public appearance in approximately a month.

Melania had spent much of the summer at the Trump family’s Bedminster, New Jersey, property. Her time away from Washington fueled media stories questioning why the first lady had largely disappeared from public view during a busy period for the administration.

But her absence had a relatively straightforward explanation. Melania was spending time with her son Barron Trump while he was on summer break from New York University and was also staying away from extensive construction underway around the White House complex.

Thursday’s appearance centered on Melania’s “Fostering the Future” initiative, which seeks to expand educational opportunities for young Americans who have spent time in foster care. She used the event to announce another significant expansion of the program.

IndyCar and Fox Sports announced a combined $2 million donation to establish scholarships for foster children at Indiana University and Purdue University. The additions bring the number of participating universities in Melania’s scholarship initiative to 26.

Melania argued that helping children succeed should be considered one of the country’s most important investments. She emphasized that young people growing up in foster care can become future American leaders if they are given the educational opportunities and resources necessary to succeed.

The event also served as a kickoff to Washington’s IndyCar Freedom 250 Grand Prix weekend. An IndyCar featuring branding for Melania’s “Be Best” and “Fostering the Future” initiatives was displayed at the White House as part of the celebration.

Drivers Scott Dixon, Alexander Rossi, Graham Rahal and Scott McLaughlin presented the first lady with a customized red, white and blue racing helmet bearing her first name. Melania is expected to remain in Washington through the weekend for festivities surrounding the race.

President Trump and the first lady are also scheduled to participate in a ceremonial lap around the Freedom 250 course before the race begins. The street circuit starts and finishes near the Capitol and winds through some of Washington’s most recognizable landmarks around the National Mall.

Melania’s foster-care work has expanded during Trump’s second term. In addition to the university scholarships, she has worked to provide foster children with Trump Savings Accounts and has pushed Congress to dedicate additional resources to young Americans in the foster-care system.

The first lady’s return ultimately allowed her to address weeks of speculation without dwelling on it. Rather than offering a lengthy explanation for her absence, Melania turned the attention into a joke before shifting the focus back to her foster-care initiative and its growing scholarship program.
