Mitch McConnell Breaks Silence On Health Scare After Lengthy Hospital Stay

Sen. Mitch McConnell has broken his silence following weeks of speculation about his health, revealing that a fall at his Washington home led to his hospitalization and insisting he did not suffer a stroke, heart attack, or any other major medical event.

In a statement released Saturday, the 84-year-old Kentucky Republican said he briefly lost consciousness after the June 14 fall. He explained that doctors determined he had not suffered a stroke, heart attack, broken bones, or other serious injuries, but he did develop a mild case of pneumonia during his hospital stay, which slowed his recovery.

McConnell attributed the fall in part to lingering effects of the polio he contracted as a child, which left his upper left leg weakened. He said he is now undergoing physical therapy and rehabilitation while working to improve his strength and reduce the risk of future falls.

The senator also released a photograph of himself smiling alongside his wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, thanking supporters for their prayers and well wishes. He acknowledged that his generation often avoids discussing personal health matters but said he wanted to reassure Kentuckians about his condition.

McConnell said he will not return to the Senate immediately, explaining that doctors have advised him to continue rehabilitation before resuming his duties in Washington. Despite his absence, he said he remains in regular contact with his staff and Senate colleagues and continues monitoring legislative developments.

His statement comes amid heightened attention on Capitol Hill following the sudden death of Sen. Lindsey Graham, which intensified public questions about McConnell’s condition after weeks of limited information from his office.

McConnell announced earlier this year that he will retire when his current Senate term ends in January 2027. While he said his recovery is progressing, he made clear that he intends to complete the remainder of his term before stepping away from public office.
