According to the San Diego Police Department, officers responded to reports of gunfire near the Islamic center located on Eckstrom Avenue as emergency personnel flooded the area.
Early reports indicated that at least one person, identified as a security guard at the mosque, was killed during the shooting. Authorities had not immediately confirmed whether a suspect had been taken into custody as law enforcement continued securing the area.
San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria said he was actively monitoring developments and receiving updates from police officials throughout the response.
“I am aware of the active shooter situation at the Islamic Center of San Diego in Clairemont and am continuing to receive updates from law enforcement,” Gloria wrote on social media.
“Emergency personnel are on scene and actively working to protect the community and secure the area,” he added.
Authorities urged residents to avoid the surrounding neighborhood while officers conducted their response operations and searched for any possible ongoing threat.
The situation remained fluid Monday afternoon as investigators worked to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting and whether additional victims may have been involved.
