Pope Leo Pushes Back On ‘At War’ Narrative With Trump, Downplays Tensions
Pope Leo XIV moved to cool speculation about a rift with Donald Trump, rejecting claims that the two are locked in a public feud and blaming media coverage for amplifying tensions.
Speaking during a recent appearance, the pope said the narrative suggesting conflict between himself and the president “has not been accurate in all of its aspects,” arguing that much of the reporting has been built on interpretations rather than direct exchanges.
He pointed to remarks he made at a recent prayer gathering, emphasizing that the speech had been prepared weeks in advance and was not intended as a response to Trump. Despite that, he said it was portrayed as part of an ongoing back-and-forth.
Pope Leo made clear he has no interest in engaging in a public debate with the president, framing his role as focused on spiritual leadership rather than political disputes.

Vice President JD Vance welcomed the pope’s comments, saying the situation reflects how media narratives can exaggerate disagreements. He acknowledged that differences in perspective exist but described the relationship as more nuanced than portrayed publicly.
I am grateful to Pope Leo for saying this. While the media narrative constantly gins up conflict–and yes, real disagreements have happened and will happen–the reality is often much more complicated.

The backdrop to the controversy includes earlier criticism from Trump, who had described the pope as “weak,” particularly in relation to statements about military action in Iran. The pope, for his part, has consistently called for peace and dialogue in response to global conflicts.
While both figures have addressed similar issues from different angles, the latest remarks suggest neither side is seeking to escalate the situation into a prolonged public dispute.
