President Trump Endorses Netanyahu Ahead of Israeli Election, Warns America Could Be Left to Confront Iran Alone

President Trump has thrown his full support behind Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ahead of Israel’s October 27 parliamentary elections, praising the longtime leader’s handling of Iran and warning that a change in leadership could leave the United States carrying a greater burden in the Middle East.

The president announced his endorsement Sunday in a lengthy Truth Social post addressed directly to the Israeli people, ending months of uncertainty about whether he would publicly support Netanyahu’s reelection campaign.

Trump described Netanyahu as a strong wartime leader and an important American partner in confronting the Iranian regime.

“Bibi Netanyahu has been a Great Warrior Prime Minister, and an even greater Partner for Peace,” Trump wrote, emphasizing their cooperation against Iran.

The president credited Netanyahu with standing alongside the United States during the military campaign launched against Iran in February, arguing that their combined efforts had significantly weakened Tehran’s military and financial capabilities.

Trump also warned that Iran could face additional military action unless its leadership changes course.

The president’s endorsement comes just nine days before Israeli voters head to the polls in an election that will determine whether Netanyahu can assemble another governing coalition.

Trump made clear that he considers Netanyahu’s continued leadership important to American interests, particularly as Washington confronts ongoing security threats from Iran.

“If Israel has the wrong Leader, which would be anyone other than Bibi, America will have to do this work ourselves, and I am not inclined to do so,” Trump declared.

The warning reflects the president’s position that Israel should remain an active partner in confronting regional threats rather than placing additional military responsibilities on American forces.

Trump also praised Netanyahu for remaining in office despite years of political controversy and pressure from opponents inside Israel.

“Bibi Netanyahu has been Strong, Brave, and Brilliant in the face of tremendous opposition, including that coming from even Israel, itself,” the president wrote.

He argued that the Israeli prime minister had endured significant challenges while continuing to pursue his government’s security objectives.

Trump concluded his message by giving Netanyahu his complete endorsement for another term as prime minister.

The announcement immediately drew a response from Netanyahu, who thanked the American president for his backing and their work together.

“Together we will complete the mission!” Netanyahu wrote on X.

The endorsement represents an important development in the relationship between the two leaders, who have maintained close political ties despite occasional disagreements over military operations and diplomatic negotiations.

Trump had previously declined to endorse Netanyahu when questioned about the Israeli election, leaving open the possibility that he might remain neutral in the contest.

As recently as Thursday, the president avoided committing himself to a candidate.

His Sunday announcement ended that uncertainty and placed the White House firmly behind Netanyahu’s reelection effort.

The decision comes during a particularly difficult period for Israel, which continues confronting the consequences of the October 7, 2023, Hamas terrorist attacks and the wars that followed.

The upcoming election will be Israel’s first national parliamentary vote since those attacks, which killed approximately 1,200 people and resulted in hundreds being taken hostage.

Netanyahu’s government has faced questions about the security failures preceding the assault, the subsequent military campaign in Gaza and the broader regional conflict.

The Israeli prime minister has maintained that his government must prioritize the country’s security and prevent hostile organizations and governments from rebuilding their military capabilities.

Iran has remained central to that strategy.

In February, American and Israeli forces launched coordinated strikes against Iranian targets, beginning a conflict that has continued to disrupt the region.

The initial operations killed Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and targeted military installations and other facilities associated with Tehran’s defense infrastructure.

Trump has repeatedly defended the campaign as necessary to confront threats posed by Iran.

However, the conflict has also created economic consequences, particularly through disruptions to international energy markets.

Rising fuel prices have become an issue in the United States as the administration seeks to contain the economic effects of the fighting.

The war has also generated disagreements between Washington and Jerusalem over the timing and scope of military operations.

Earlier this year, Trump expressed frustration with Netanyahu during discussions about Israeli operations involving Hezbollah in Lebanon.

The president was reportedly concerned that continued military escalation could interfere with diplomatic efforts involving Iran.

Despite those disagreements, Sunday’s endorsement demonstrates that Trump continues to regard Netanyahu as a valuable security partner.

Israel’s election is being contested by several political parties, with Netanyahu’s Likud party seeking enough parliamentary support to form another government.

Among the major challengers is Gadi Eisenkot, a former Israeli military chief whose Yashar party has emerged as a significant competitor.

Israeli governments are formed through parliamentary coalitions, meaning the largest party does not automatically secure the prime minister’s office.

A coalition must command the support of at least 61 members of Israel’s 120-seat Knesset.

Recent polling has indicated that neither Netanyahu’s existing coalition nor the opposition has a guaranteed parliamentary majority, leaving the composition of the next government uncertain.

Trump’s endorsement arrives as the parties enter the final stretch of campaigning.

The president remains popular among significant portions of the Israeli public, particularly voters who value his administration’s military and diplomatic support for Israel.

His decision to intervene publicly also underscores the importance Washington places on the outcome of the election.

During Trump’s first presidency, the United States recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, moved the American embassy there and recognized Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights.

His administration also helped negotiate the Abraham Accords, which established diplomatic normalization agreements between Israel and several Arab countries.

Those achievements became defining elements of the relationship between Trump and Netanyahu.

The two leaders have continued working together during Trump’s second term, particularly on security matters involving Iran.

Nevertheless, the upcoming election remains a decision for Israeli voters, who will determine the makeup of the Knesset and the possibilities for forming a new government.

Trump has now made his preference unmistakable.

With the election scheduled for October 27, the president is publicly backing Netanyahu while warning that a change in Israeli leadership could complicate American efforts to confront Iran and maintain security cooperation in the Middle East.
