Sam Burns Rocks the Oakmont Course in 2025 U.S. Open Round 2

Round 2 of the 2025 U.S. Open held at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania saw Sam Burns excel, scoring a phenomenal 65. By ending the round 3-under-par, Burns has managed to pull ahead of J.J. Spaun, the leader of the first round, by a single stroke. Following them closely is Viktor Hovland, sitting at 1 under par.

The unforgiving Oakmont course has proven tricky for many golfers. Thriston Lawrence and Thomas Detry fell victim to it, experiencing late collapses during the second round, thereby not being under par. Overall, few players managed to score under par.

Scottie Scheffler, recognized as the number one golfer worldwide, struggled as well, posting a 4-over-par performance. This meant he ended the day seven strokes behind the leaders. This setback left many of his fans and supporters disappointed.

The 2025 Masters champion, Rory McIlroy, who almost bagged victory in the previous year’s U.S. Open, just managed to make the cut. Whereas Bryson DeChambeau, victor of the U.S. Open in 2024 by a slim margin over McIlroy, failed to make the cut at all, dealing an unexpected blow to the hopes of many.

Delays marred the end of the day’s play, as heavy rainfalls around 8:15 p.m. EST led to play being halted with several golfers yet to complete their rounds. These remaining golfers had only a few holes left to play. Among them was Thriston Lawrence, who yet remains on the course.

The expectation is for the Second-round play of the U.S. Open to conclude early on Saturday, irrespective of Friday evening’s interruptions. Intermittent lightning at Oakmont forced officials to blow the horn, suspending play while some golfers like Lawrence were still on the course.

With a 4-foot par putt left, Lawrence, who is just above par, is expected to resume and complete his game early Saturday morning. He will then likely wait until an afternoon tee time for the next round. Provided no further lightning strikes within the given restriction, play may very well continue under the remaining daylight.

Scheffler looks toward Saturday’s play trailing Sam Burns’ outstanding lead by a considerable seven strokes. Meanwhile, Lawrence, currently residing at 1-over-par and 4-over for this particular round, readies himself to conclude the second round under escalating rain showers.

Oakmont’s weather conditions continue to intensify as rain becomes increasingly heavy. Yet, despite audible rumbles of thunder in the distance, no lightning prompted immediate course evacuation. However, this could very well change depending on the weather’s trajectory.

On a more unfortunate note, George Duangmanee landed at the bottom of the leaderboard, carrying a hefty 35-over-par score from both the first and second rounds. His performance starkly contrasts that of the tournament leaders.

Moving onto brighter news, Rory McIlroy succeeds in making the cut at the U.S. Open 2025. His exceptional approach shot from the fairway, placed him into a position for a birdie on No. 18. Consequently, this reduced his score to 6-over and his spot on Saturday was secured.

Adam Scott shares his position at even-par with Ben Griffin, a player fifteen years his junior. The latter managed to mirror Scott’s performance during a predominantly uneventful second round, and maintaining a steady score was a victory in itself.

Griffin’s scorecard was marked 1-over 71 for today. However, impressive stability on display, he paired his final seven holes, proving his resilience despite disappointing second round results.

Thriston Lawrence’s score worsened with an unfortunate double bogey, pushing his tally beyond par. Struggling particularly with the 4th hole’s rough and putting proved detrimental to his round, leaving five holes remaining for him to make amends.

According to recent reports from the Peacock broadcast, Oakmont is expected to experience heavy showers in the evening. While the absence of lightning means the game can go on, such weather could hinder Lawrence in his efforts to maintain his score in the remaining holes.

Rory McIlroy had a critical shot at the 17th, hitting the bunker off the tee. This put his chances of making the cut in a precarious position. Lastly, the under-par group was reduced even further. Thomas Detry had a second double bogey due to poor putting, dropping him to 1-over-par.
