Trump Administration Promises Unprecedented Economic ‘One-Two Punch’ Against Iran Next Week

The Trump administration is preparing to unleash a new wave of economic measures against Iran next week, with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent promising a level of financial isolation that he says has never before been imposed on another country.

Bessent revealed the coming measures during an interview with Newsmax, saying President Trump intends to dramatically increase economic pressure on Tehran as the United States maintains its naval blockade of Iranian ports.

The Treasury secretary described the strategy as a “one-two punch” combining the blockade with aggressive financial measures intended to further isolate Iran from the global economy. He said additional announcements detailing the administration’s plans will come next week.

Bessent stopped short of revealing exactly what measures Treasury intends to impose, explaining that legal restrictions prevent him from discussing sanctions before they are officially announced. But he indicated the administration is preparing something significantly more aggressive than previous economic actions.

The effort is being conducted under what the administration calls “Operation Economic Fury,” the financial counterpart to the military campaign known as “Operation Epic Fury.” Trump officials believe economic warfare can place enormous pressure on Tehran without requiring another immediate expansion of military operations.

The administration has already targeted Iran’s ability to obtain foreign currency, export oil and move money through international financial networks. Treasury has also pursued money exchangers, cryptocurrency operations and other methods Tehran has allegedly used to evade American sanctions.

Bessent argued that earlier economic pressure helped create a severe dollar shortage inside Iran, contributing to soaring inflation and growing economic instability. The administration now intends to intensify those pressures as Tehran continues resisting American demands.

The financial campaign is being reinforced by the U.S. Navy blockade surrounding Iran. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has said the United States can maintain the blockade indefinitely by rotating American warships through the region, giving Washington the ability to continue restricting Iranian trade.

President Trump has increasingly signaled that he believes economic pressure can accomplish American objectives without immediately launching another major military offensive. The president has argued that Iran’s economy has been devastated and that Washington now possesses enormous leverage over Tehran.

Iran has nevertheless refused to surrender its position over the Strait of Hormuz, while negotiations aimed at resolving the conflict have struggled to produce a breakthrough. Tehran has also faced increasingly severe restrictions on its oil exports, one of the regime’s most important sources of revenue.

Bessent dismissed claims that Iran remains economically strong and argued that anyone making such assertions does not understand the pressure Tehran is facing. With the naval blockade already squeezing Iranian trade, the administration is now preparing to add another powerful layer of economic pressure.

The details will not become clear until next week, but Bessent’s warning leaves little doubt about the administration’s intentions. Trump officials are preparing what they describe as unprecedented economic isolation, pairing financial warfare with American naval power in an effort to force Tehran to bend.
