Trump Administration To Use Same Contractor For Reflecting Pool Repairs, Burgum Says

The Trump administration plans to use the same company that handled the original renovation of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool to repair damage to the pool’s liner, according to Interior Secretary Doug Burgum. Burgum defended the contractor’s work and said the company had done a “fantastic job” on the project overall.

The Reflecting Pool underwent a roughly $16 million renovation ahead of America’s 250th birthday celebrations, including repairs to long-standing leaks, installation of a new liner, and upgrades aimed at combating persistent algae problems. Burgum said the project successfully reduced water loss and dramatically improved water quality in the historic landmark.

Problems emerged shortly after the renovation was completed, however, when portions of the liner began peeling and officials discovered damage that the administration says was caused by vandalism. President Trump and administration officials have pointed to cuts and gashes in the material that they say were intentionally inflicted using sharp objects.

Federal authorities have already brought charges against former Olympic canoeist David Hearn in connection with alleged damage to the site, while investigators continue examining other incidents involving the Reflecting Pool. Administration officials say additional security cameras have been installed to prevent future vandalism.

Despite criticism surrounding the project, Burgum said the repairs should cost only a small fraction of the original renovation because the bulk of the labor and materials have already been completed. He expressed confidence that the pool will be fully restored in the coming weeks.

The administration has decided against reopening the bidding process and will instead move forward with the original contractor as work continues on one of the nation’s most recognizable landmarks.
