President Donald Trump secured a major legislative victory on Tuesday as the Senate narrowly passed the “One Big, Beautiful Bill” — a cornerstone of his second-term agenda — thanks to a tie-breaking vote cast by Vice President JD Vance.
The 900-plus-page bill passed 51-50 after an intense vote-a-rama and last-minute lobbying that won just enough GOP support to push it through. Three Republicans — Thom Tillis (NC), Rand Paul (KY), and Susan Collins (ME) — joined Democrats in voting no, forcing Vance to break the tie.
Pushed through the reconciliation process to avoid the 60-vote filibuster threshold, the bill includes:
-
Permanent extension of the 2017 Trump tax cuts
-
Massive increases in border security and military funding
-
Deregulation for American energy production
-
Trillions in debt ceiling adjustments to sustain economic growth
“Republicans, the One Big Beautiful Bill, perhaps the greatest and most important of its kind in history, gives the largest Tax Cuts and Border Security ever, Jobs by the Millions, Military/Vets increases, and so much more,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “The failure to pass means a whopping 68% Tax increase, the largest in history!!!”
The legislation now returns to the House, where it passed in late May. But with the Senate’s amendments, Speaker Mike Johnson has promised a full 72-hour review window, meaning a final vote may not occur until after Trump’s July 4 deadline. Johnson said the bill will be “JET FUEL” for the U.S. economy and highlighted provisions eliminating taxes on tips and overtime and offering new tax relief for seniors.
Still, tensions remain. Fiscal hawks in the House are warning that the Senate’s version could fuel the national debt, and key provisions were stripped from the final version after failing reconciliation scrutiny — including a 10-year moratorium on AI regulations and a proposal to sell off public lands.
Trump has made clear that opposition will come at a political cost. He has already backed primary challengers to lawmakers who opposed the bill, such as Tillis, who announced his retirement Sunday. Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY), another vocal critic, is also facing threats from Trump and now Elon Musk, who vowed to unseat Republicans he views as betraying fiscal conservatism.
With the final vote looming in the House, Trump’s allies are pulling out all the stops to deliver a landmark legislative package that combines tax relief, spending boosts, and conservative reforms in one sweeping measure — all ahead of Independence Day.
