President Donald Trump is calling out California Governor Gavin Newsom as a liar after Newsom publicly claimed he never spoke with the President before the federal government deployed National Guard troops to Los Angeles. Trump responded by posting a White House call log showing a 16-minute phone conversation that took place on June 7.
“What a liar he is,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, attaching the call record. “He begged me not to embarrass him. I told him to get his ass in gear and stop letting the city burn.”
Newsom had previously told reporters there was “no call, not even a voicemail,” in an attempt to portray the Trump administration’s decision as unlawful and unilateral. That narrative crumbled once Trump released the call log.

The exchange is just the latest in a high-stakes feud between state and federal leadership, as thousands of National Guard troops and Marines continue to secure Los Angeles following violent anti-ICE riots. Federal officers have faced ambushes, Molotov cocktails, and organized attacks, prompting Trump to invoke the Insurrection Act and send in reinforcements.
While Newsom and LA Mayor Karen Bass accuse Trump of overreach, the President insists he’s doing what they refused to: restore law and order and protect federal agents under attack.
The political calculation from Newsom appears to have backfired. What was meant to be a swipe at Trump’s leadership turned into a self-inflicted wound, as the public saw clear proof that the governor had, in fact, been warned—and chose to posture instead of act.
Trump’s message was unmistakable: the truth is on record, and so is Newsom’s failure.
