Trump Posts Map Suggesting New Mexico Be Renamed ‘New America’
President Donald Trump floated another America-themed geographic name change Sunday, sharing a map that suggested New Mexico should instead be called “New America.”
The image, posted to Trump’s Truth Social account, showed an outline of the southwestern state with the word “Mexico” crossed out and replaced with “America.”
The official White House social media account later shared the same image, although neither the president nor the administration initially provided an explanation for the post.
Trump subsequently posted an AI-generated video depicting himself replacing “Mexico” with “America” on a New Mexico welcome sign.
He wrote that “many people” had suggested changing the state’s name and coupled the idea with an allegation that New Mexico has been a major source of election fraud. No evidence establishing widespread fraud sufficient to alter New Mexico’s election results was presented with the post.
The suggestion follows several geographic renaming efforts undertaken by Trump during his second administration.
Shortly after returning to office in January 2025, Trump directed the federal government to use “Gulf of America” instead of Gulf of Mexico, saying the change was intended to honor American greatness.
More recently, Trump signed an executive order directing the federal government to refer to Lake Ontario as “Lake America” amid escalating trade tensions between the United States and Canada.
The New Mexico post differs significantly from those moves, however, because a president does not have unilateral constitutional authority to legally change the name of a U.S. state.
No formal White House proposal to rename New Mexico has been announced, and the image itself does not legally alter the state’s name.
Trump shared the map during a rapid-fire stretch of activity on Truth Social in which he reportedly published 34 posts in less than an hour.
Other posts included an edited image placing Trump’s face on the body of professional wrestling legend Hulk Hogan while wearing a “MAGA” bandana.
Another altered image depicted Iran’s borders reshaped into an outline resembling Trump’s profile as the conflict involving the United States and Iran continued.
Trump also shared several graphics touting economic statistics and what he characterized as improvements under his administration.
The president has frequently used edited images, memes and AI-generated content on social media to promote policies, attack political opponents and draw attention to issues favored by his administration.
New Mexico has been a state since 1912, and its name has roots stretching back centuries before statehood. The Spanish name “Nuevo México” was used for the region long before the modern United States acquired the territory.
For now, “New America” remains a suggestion promoted through Trump’s social media accounts rather than an official change to the state’s name.
