Trump Urges Hope As Search Continues For Nancy Guthrie After Ransom Note Revelation
President Donald Trump said he remains hopeful that authorities will find Nancy Guthrie, the mother of NBC News anchor Savannah Guthrie, as investigators continue searching for answers nearly five months after her disappearance.
“I hope they find her,” Trump told reporters after landing in Pennsylvania for a speech. “That family has gone through hell. I hope they find her.”
The president’s comments came after reports revealed new details about a pair of ransom notes allegedly sent to the Guthrie family following Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance on February 1.
According to the reports, the first note claimed the 84-year-old was alive and being held. A second note later stated that Guthrie, who reportedly suffered from a heart condition, had died and been buried in a natural area.
Despite the messages, investigators have not confirmed the authenticity of the claims, and Nancy Guthrie remains missing. Authorities have publicly identified no suspects and have disclosed few details about the ongoing investigation.
Trump has expressed concern about the case since the beginning. Shortly after Nancy Guthrie vanished, he personally contacted Savannah Guthrie to offer support and pledged the resources of the federal government to assist with the search effort.
Earlier this year, Trump also warned that anyone responsible for harming Guthrie would face severe consequences if brought to justice.
“If she’s found dead, those responsible will face very, very severe — the most severe — consequences,” Trump said at the time, suggesting the death penalty could be pursued if warranted under federal law.
The emotional toll of the ordeal was evident this week when Savannah Guthrie addressed the case during a live broadcast of NBC’s “Today” show.
Fighting back tears, she told viewers that her family remains desperate for answers.
“I don’t have any comment on this story and I’m not involved in our coverage, but I can’t pretend I’m not here,” Guthrie said. “We are in agony and we cannot be at peace.”
She also made a direct appeal to the public for information that could help investigators.
“No matter how much I try to come out here every day and smile and find that joy — and I will, I promise I will — this is the moment to tell you we need your help,” Guthrie said. “We’re begging for your help and I’m not going to miss that opportunity.”
As the investigation continues, law enforcement officials have not indicated whether the ransom notes have generated any significant leads, leaving the Guthrie family still searching for answers about what happened to Nancy Guthrie.
