Trump, Zelensky Hold High-Stakes White House Meeting Ahead Of Lindsey Graham’s Funeral
President Trump welcomed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to the White House Tuesday for a private meeting focused on the war in Ukraine, military cooperation, and ongoing peace efforts, just hours before both leaders attended the funeral of the late Sen. Lindsey Graham.
The closed-door meeting lasted about an hour and marked another step in the improving relationship between President Trump and Zelensky following months of diplomatic engagement. The two leaders discussed the current state of the war, Ukraine’s defense needs, and potential paths toward ending the conflict with Russia.
According to reports, Zelensky sought additional U.S. military assistance, including expanded air defense capabilities and cooperation on drone production. President Trump has recently expressed greater optimism about Ukraine’s position while continuing to push for a negotiated peace agreement that would bring an end to the fighting.
Unlike their highly publicized Oval Office confrontation in early 2025, Tuesday’s meeting was conducted entirely behind closed doors. Zelensky entered and departed the White House through a side entrance without making public remarks, underscoring the sensitive nature of the discussions. Vice President JD Vance did not attend the meeting, instead participating in ceremonies honoring Sen. Graham at the U.S. Capitol.
The meeting also reflected Lindsey Graham’s longstanding support for Ukraine. Before his passing, the South Carolina senator had traveled to Kyiv, where he worked with Ukrainian leaders on a bipartisan sanctions proposal aimed at increasing economic pressure on Russia. Graham remained one of Congress’s strongest advocates for military and diplomatic support for Ukraine throughout the conflict.
Following their White House discussions, President Trump and Zelensky joined Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other world leaders at the Washington National Cathedral for Graham’s funeral. The gathering brought together several key international allies while highlighting Graham’s influence on American foreign policy and national security.
The White House meeting came during a busy day of diplomacy for President Trump, who also hosted Netanyahu to discuss Iran, regional security, and efforts to prevent Tehran from advancing its nuclear program. With conflicts in both Eastern Europe and the Middle East dominating the agenda, Tuesday’s meetings underscored the administration’s continued focus on major international security challenges.
