White House Touts “Best Black Friday Ever” as Trump-Era Economy Drives Holiday Spending Surge
The White House is celebrating what officials are calling a historic kickoff to the holiday shopping season, with National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett declaring, “We just had the best Black Friday that we’ve ever seen.”
Appearing on Fox & Friends: Weekend, Hassett credited the surge in spending to a combination of wage growth under President Donald Trump and renewed consumer confidence following the resolution of the recent government shutdown.
“It’s not just because people are out there, you know, taking debt on their credit cards,” Hassett explained. “It’s because incomes are way up under President Trump. They dropped about $3,000 a person, $6,000 a family, under Joe Biden — and it’s up $1,500 a person so far this year.”
According to Hassett, the financial relief Americans are feeling this season is rooted in lower inflation, stronger wage growth, and confidence that the economy is headed in the right direction under the current administration.
“With all that extra money, and with the government shutdown over so that people feel comfortable going back to stores, we’re seeing a really blow-out Thanksgiving and Christmas coming our way,” he said. “All the retailers expect that both online and in-store sales are going to be the highest we’ve ever seen.”

Inflation, which spiked as high as 10% under Biden, is now running around 2.5% under Trump, according to Hassett. He emphasized that current wage growth is outpacing inflation, giving Americans more real purchasing power than they had in recent years.
Speaking on CBS News, Hassett echoed the same optimism, pushing back on the idea that Americans are merely spending more because prices are higher. “The folks who were saying, ‘Well, maybe people are going to be anxious about going back and getting presents for the kids and so on,’ they have been disproven this weekend,” he said.
Retailers across the country are reportedly preparing for a record-setting holiday season, with both online and brick-and-mortar outlets expecting a surge in sales through the end of the year. The White House sees it as a clear sign that Americans are feeling the benefits of what they call “the Trump recovery.”
Top White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett says Black Friday spending increased this year, although early forecasts indicated that if spending was higher, it would likely be due to higher prices.
