Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is scheduled to meet with President Donald Trump at the White House this Friday to finalize a significant mineral rights agreement between the United States and Ukraine. This development follows extensive negotiations aimed at bolstering economic ties and addressing the financial implications of U.S. support during Ukraine’s ongoing conflict with Russia.

Key Aspects of the Agreement:

  • Revenue Sharing: Ukraine will allocate 50% of proceeds from the future monetization of its state-owned mineral resources, including oil and gas, into a joint fund. This fund is designated for investment in Ukrainian infrastructure and development projects.

  • U.S. Concessions: The United States has retracted its initial demand for $500 billion in potential revenue from Ukraine’s mineral resources.

  • Security Guarantees: The current agreement does not encompass specific U.S. security assurances that Ukraine had sought.

President Trump highlighted the magnitude of the deal, stating, “It’s a very big deal. It could be a trillion-dollar deal.” He emphasized the substantial U.S. investment in the region, noting, “We’re spending hundreds of billions of dollars on Ukraine and Russia fighting a war that should have never, ever happened.”

This agreement aims to capitalize on Ukraine’s extensive mineral reserves, which include critical resources such as lithium and rare earth elements vital for various industries. However, the ongoing conflict poses challenges to the full exploitation of these resources, as significant deposits are located in areas currently under Russian control.

Deputy Prime Minister Olha Stefanishyna, who has been leading the negotiations for Ukraine, remarked that the mineral agreement is “part of the picture,” indicating that it fits into a broader strategy for Ukraine’s economic recovery and partnership with the U.S.

The signing of this agreement is anticipated to strengthen U.S.-Ukraine relations and provide a framework for future collaboration in the development of Ukraine’s natural resources.
