DeSantis Unveils New Florida Map That Could Boost GOP House Seats

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has introduced a proposed congressional map that could significantly reshape the state’s political landscape, potentially giving Republicans up to four additional seats in the U.S. House.

The plan targets several Democratic-leaning districts across central and southern Florida, consolidating Democratic strength in areas like Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, and West Palm Beach while expanding Republican advantages elsewhere. If enacted, the map could shift the balance of Florida’s 28-seat delegation further toward the GOP.

DeSantis framed the proposal as a response to population changes and legal concerns about how current districts were drawn. He argued that race-based districting should not be a factor and said the new lines would better reflect Florida’s demographic and political shifts.

To move the plan forward, DeSantis has called a special legislative session, an unusual step given that redistricting typically happens once per decade following the census. With Republicans controlling both chambers of the state legislature, the proposal is widely expected to receive serious consideration.

The move comes amid a broader national redistricting battle. In Virginia, a recent referendum backed by Gov. Abigail Spanberger could allow Democrats to expand their advantage in that state’s congressional delegation, though the plan is facing legal challenges.

The political back-and-forth has drawn sharp reactions from national figures. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries warned Florida Republicans against pursuing aggressive redistricting, while DeSantis responded by mocking the criticism and inviting Jeffries to campaign in Florida.

Support for the governor’s effort has also come from House Speaker Mike Johnson, who said states have the authority to redraw their maps and suggested Florida should move ahead with the changes.

The proposal is part of a growing trend of mid-decade redistricting efforts across multiple states, including Texas and California, as both parties look for ways to gain an edge ahead of upcoming elections.

If approved, Florida’s new map could play a key role in shaping control of Congress, especially given the currently narrow margins in the House.
