DOJ Launches Investigation Into Eric Swalwell As Allegations Mount
Former congressman Eric Swalwell is now facing a Justice Department investigation over multiple sexual assault allegations, according to a source familiar with the matter.
Federal prosecutors in New York, along with investigators in Los Angeles, are reportedly examining claims from at least five women accusing Swalwell of sexual misconduct, including allegations of rape. The former lawmaker has denied any criminal wrongdoing, while acknowledging what he described as “mistakes in judgment” in recent public statements.
The probe marks a significant escalation, coming just days after Swalwell suspended his California gubernatorial campaign and resigned from Congress amid the growing controversy.
Interim US Attorney Jeanine Pirro announced the creation of a hotline encouraging individuals to report any alleged misconduct tied to the former congressman. At the same time, Kash Patel publicly urged potential witnesses or victims to come forward, stating that federal authorities are prepared to receive and review any relevant information.
Several of the allegations include graphic claims. One accuser told media outlets that she was heavily intoxicated and woke up in a hotel room to find Swalwell assaulting her. Another woman, identified as model Lonna Drewes, alleged that she was drugged, raped, and choked during a 2018 encounter at a hotel in West Hollywood.
Swalwell has pushed back forcefully against the accusations, calling them false and vowing to defend himself. However, the political fallout has been swift. Dozens of Democratic allies who had previously backed his gubernatorial run have withdrawn their support, and pressure mounted rapidly for him to step aside from public office.
The investigation remains ongoing, and no charges have been announced at this stage.
