FBI Raids Beverly Hills Mansion in Expanding Eric Swalwell Investigation Following Sexual Assault Allegations

Federal agents raided a multimillion-dollar Beverly Hills mansion Tuesday morning as part of an expanding criminal investigation involving former Democratic Congressman Eric Swalwell, whose political career collapsed earlier this year following multiple allegations of sexual misconduct.

The FBI executed a search warrant at the home of billionaire businessman and longtime Democratic donor Stephen Cloobeck, who previously supported Swalwell’s campaign for California governor and allowed the former congressman to stay at his property.

Approximately two dozen federal agents reportedly arrived at the mansion around 6 a.m. local time, conducting an extensive search of the residence on North Roxbury Drive near Benedict Canyon Drive.

Several individuals were reportedly escorted from the property in handcuffs before being released. Cloobeck was not home when agents arrived, and authorities have not announced any arrests connected to Tuesday’s operation.

The FBI confirmed that agents conducted a law enforcement operation in the Los Angeles area involving an ongoing criminal investigation but declined to disclose additional information.

Court documents associated with the search warrant remain sealed, leaving the specific evidence sought by investigators undisclosed.

Law enforcement sources confirmed that the raid was connected to the federal investigation involving Swalwell, who resigned from Congress in April after several women accused him of sexual misconduct, including sexual assault.

The former congressman has denied the allegations and has not been charged with a crime.

Tuesday’s operation represents another development in a federal investigation that previously resulted in searches of Swalwell’s Washington, D.C., residence and the seizure of his electronic devices.

In August, federal agents confronted Swalwell at San Francisco International Airport and confiscated electronic equipment, including his cellphone, as part of the ongoing investigation.

Investigators subsequently searched his Washington residence under a separate warrant.

According to court records, federal authorities sought evidence related to whether Swalwell violated a civil rights statute prohibiting individuals acting under government authority from willfully depriving others of their constitutional rights.

The investigation followed allegations that Swalwell engaged in sexual misconduct while serving in Congress, including accusations involving a former congressional staff member.

One woman alleged that Swalwell sexually assaulted her on two occasions, including during her employment in his congressional office.

Other women subsequently came forward with allegations involving unwanted sexual advances, inappropriate messages and explicit photographs.

Another accuser alleged that Swalwell sexually assaulted her at a Southern California hotel in 2018 after she consumed alcohol and became concerned that she had been drugged.

These allegations have not been established in court, and Swalwell has repeatedly denied criminal wrongdoing.

The controversy erupted in April while Swalwell was campaigning to become California’s next governor.

The accusations prompted growing pressure from political figures and congressional colleagues, ultimately leading Swalwell to abandon his gubernatorial campaign and resign from the House of Representatives.

His departure ended a congressional career spanning approximately 13 years.

Swalwell had become a prominent Democratic voice on Capitol Hill through his frequent criticism of President Trump and his involvement in congressional investigations.

He served on the House Intelligence and Judiciary committees and was closely associated with Democratic efforts to investigate Trump during his first administration.

The former congressman also became a familiar television commentator, regularly appearing on national news programs to challenge Republican policies and defend Democratic positions.

His resignation represented a major political reversal for a politician who had sought statewide office after building a national profile.

The Beverly Hills property searched Tuesday belongs to Cloobeck, founder of Diamond Resorts International and a wealthy political donor with longstanding ties to California Democrats.

Federal campaign finance records indicate that Cloobeck contributed more than $23,000 to Swalwell’s congressional campaigns beginning in 2017.

The businessman also supported Swalwell’s campaign for governor before the allegations became public.

Cloobeck later acknowledged that Swalwell had stayed at his Los Angeles-area residence but said he ended their association after learning about the accusations.

In April, Cloobeck publicly withdrew his support, declaring that he could no longer associate himself with someone facing allegations of mistreating women.

His relationship with Swalwell has drawn renewed attention because investigators targeted his residence rather than a property currently owned or occupied by the former congressman.

Authorities have not disclosed whether investigators recovered documents, electronic devices or other evidence during Tuesday’s search.

Cloobeck has also faced separate legal problems unrelated to the Swalwell investigation.

Earlier this year, Los Angeles County prosecutors charged the businessman with attempting to discourage witnesses from participating in a criminal case involving his former fiancée, social media personality Adva Lavie.

Cloobeck pleaded not guilty to those charges.

The separate prosecution involves allegations of witness interference and has not been publicly established as connected to the federal investigation of Swalwell.

Tuesday’s search comes amid additional scrutiny of Swalwell following the release of previously classified FBI records concerning his relationship with Christine Fang, a Chinese national suspected of having connections to Chinese intelligence.

The White House released documents Monday detailing interviews conducted by federal investigators in 2015 and 2016.

According to those records, Swalwell acknowledged having a sexual relationship with Fang, who had developed connections with American political figures.

The records reportedly describe several encounters between the two, with their final sexual encounter occurring in March 2015.

Fang, also known as Fang Fang, previously attracted federal attention because of suspected connections to China’s Ministry of State Security.

Her activities became a political controversy after reports emerged that she had cultivated relationships with local and national political figures in California.

Swalwell previously maintained that he cooperated with federal investigators when concerns about Fang were brought to his attention.

The newly released records have renewed questions about his judgment and relationships during his early years in Congress.

However, authorities have not publicly established that the Fang investigation is connected to Tuesday’s Beverly Hills search.

The FBI operation instead comes against the backdrop of ongoing investigations involving sexual misconduct allegations against Swalwell.

Separate authorities in New York and Los Angeles have also examined accusations involving the former congressman.

Those investigations remain distinct from the federal inquiry, and no criminal conviction has been entered against Swalwell.

The FBI’s latest action demonstrates that federal investigators are continuing to pursue evidence months after the former lawmaker left office.

Search warrants generally require investigators to establish probable cause that evidence relevant to a crime may be found at the location being searched.

However, the execution of a search warrant does not establish that the property owner or any other individual committed a crime.

The fact that agents searched Cloobeck’s residence also does not establish that he participated in any alleged misconduct involving Swalwell.

Investigators have not publicly identified the specific materials they sought or explained why they believed the Beverly Hills property could contain relevant evidence.

The Justice Department has also not announced whether prosecutors intend to pursue charges against Swalwell.

The former congressman’s legal representatives have maintained his innocence as the investigations continue.

The developments place additional attention on a former Democratic lawmaker who spent years criticizing President Trump and Republican officials over allegations of misconduct and questions of accountability.

Swalwell’s resignation in April removed him from public office, but it did not bring an end to the legal scrutiny surrounding the allegations.

The seizure of electronic devices in August and Tuesday’s search of a former political supporter’s mansion indicate that investigators have continued examining evidence across multiple locations.

Federal authorities have not disclosed when the investigation might conclude or whether additional searches are anticipated.

For now, the search warrant remains sealed, the allegations against Swalwell remain unproven, and the FBI has offered few details about the latest operation.

The Beverly Hills raid nevertheless marks another significant development in an investigation that has already ended Swalwell’s congressional career and derailed his campaign for California governor.
