Here’s What We Know About WHCD Shooting Suspect Cole Tomas Allen

A 31-year-old California man has been identified by authorities as the suspect in the shooting that caused chaos at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, D.C., prompting the evacuation of President Donald Trump and hundreds of attendees.

Law enforcement officials say Cole Tomas Allen, a resident of Torrance, California, has been charged with using a firearm during a crime of violence and assaulting a federal officer with a dangerous weapon. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro said additional charges are expected as the investigation continues.

Authorities say Allen forced his way through a security checkpoint outside the ballroom at the Washington Hilton, where thousands of guests had gathered. The situation escalated quickly when he opened fire, discharging multiple rounds before being stopped by Secret Service agents.

Trump later described the suspect as a “would-be assassin,” crediting security personnel for preventing further harm. The president and First Lady Melania Trump were safely evacuated, and officials confirmed there were no serious injuries among attendees.

At least one Secret Service agent was struck but protected by a ballistic vest and is expected to recover. Authorities confirmed the suspect was taken into custody at the scene.

Investigators say Allen was armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and several knives. Interim D.C. Police Chief Jeff Carroll stated that Allen is believed to have acted alone, though the investigation remains ongoing.

Secret Service Director Sean Curran said the agency’s layered security measures worked as intended, stopping the suspect before he could reach the main event space.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said authorities are still working to determine how Allen obtained the weapons and brought them into Washington. Federal agents have conducted a search of his residence in California as part of the probe.

Officials say Allen has an academic background in engineering and computer science and had been working as an instructor at a tutoring company. His social media activity is also being reviewed as part of the investigation.

While authorities believe the suspect was targeting members of the Trump administration, they have not identified a specific individual as the intended target and have not confirmed a clear motive.

Allen remains in federal custody and is expected to appear in court in the coming days as investigators continue examining the circumstances surrounding the attack.
