McConnell Hospitalized After Medical Emergency at Washington Home

Sen. Mitch McConnell was reportedly found unconscious at his Washington, D.C., residence last month and may have suffered a heart attack before being transported to a local hospital, according to emergency dispatch records made public Wednesday.

The June 14 dispatch call indicated that emergency crews were sent to the former Senate Republican leader’s home shortly before 9 a.m. The radio traffic referenced an Advanced Life Support ambulance responding to a patient experiencing cardiac arrest and noted that CPR was in progress.

The emergency communications were first reported by Punchbowl News.

Representatives for McConnell declined to comment on the details contained in the dispatch records.

At the time of the incident, a spokesman for the Kentucky Republican confirmed only that McConnell had been admitted to the hospital and was receiving medical care.

The following day, spokesman David Popp said the senator was recovering and remained engaged in Senate business.

“He is working closely with staff on Senate business and Kentucky matters as he continues his recovery,” Popp said.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune later told reporters that McConnell remained actively involved in legislative discussions and that the two had spoken by phone.

McConnell, 84, has experienced several health issues in recent years, including multiple falls that resulted in injuries such as a concussion and fractured ribs.

He has also experienced several highly publicized incidents in which he appeared to freeze or become momentarily unable to speak during public appearances, incidents that aides attributed to light-headedness.

The Senate is currently in recess and is scheduled to return to session on July 13.
