NJ Rep. Tom Kean Breaks Silence On Health Absence, Promises Return Soon

Rep. Tom Kean Jr. has publicly addressed his extended absence from Congress, citing a “personal medical issue” and assuring constituents he expects to return to work in the near future.

The New Jersey Republican, who has not cast a vote since early March, released a statement thanking colleagues for their patience and expressing confidence in his recovery. He said his doctors expect a full recovery and emphasized his intention to resume duties “very soon.”

Kean’s unexplained absence had raised concerns on Capitol Hill, particularly given the already narrow Republican majority in the House. Lawmakers from both parties had reportedly been left with limited information about his condition until recent days.

House Speaker Mike Johnson confirmed he spoke directly with Kean and described him as dedicated, adding that he expects the congressman to return at full strength.

The situation comes at a time when Congress has faced multiple health-related disruptions among its members, including several deaths in office. Most recently, Rep. David Scott passed away, further tightening margins in the House.

With Republicans holding only a slim edge, prolonged absences can complicate legislative efforts, particularly on closely contested votes. Kean represents one of the most competitive districts in the country and is currently seeking reelection.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his absence, Kean’s statement appears aimed at reassuring both colleagues and voters that his condition is temporary and that he will soon return to full participation in Congress.
