DOJ Probes WHCD Shooter’s Possible Ties To Activist Groups

The U.S. Department of Justice is investigating whether White House Correspondents’ Dinner shooting suspect Cole Allen had connections to activist organizations, including a group known as the “Wide Awakes,” officials said.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche confirmed that federal authorities are examining Allen’s background, affiliations, and online activity as part of a broader probe into the attempted attack.

“There’s a lot of people investigating this man right now, including the FBI,” Blanche said, noting that authorities are working to determine whether Allen had ties to any organized groups or movements.

The “Wide Awakes” describe themselves as a modern activist collective inspired by a Civil War-era abolitionist movement, promoting protests, artistic expression, and political engagement. Investigators are reviewing whether Allen had any formal or informal involvement with the group or similar networks.

Authorities have also been combing through Allen’s digital footprint, including social media posts and communications, as well as his travel history leading up to the incident. Officials say he arrived in Washington, D.C., days before the event and was staying at the Washington Hilton, where the correspondents’ dinner took place.

According to court filings, Allen was armed with multiple weapons when he attempted to breach a security checkpoint outside the ballroom. He was stopped by Secret Service agents before reaching the main event space. One agent was struck but protected by body armor.

Prosecutors have filed multiple federal charges, including firearm-related offenses tied to the incident. Investigators are also analyzing a document attributed to Allen that outlined his intentions prior to the attack, which is now central to the case.

Officials caution that the investigation remains ongoing, and they have not reached final conclusions about motive or whether any group involvement played a role. Allen is expected to appear in federal court for a detention hearing as the case moves forward.

The probe is part of a wider effort by federal authorities to understand how the attack was planned, whether warning signs were missed, and how similar incidents can be prevented in the future.
