Trump Rips Mayor Zohran Mamdani, Says He’d Be The ‘Greatest Communist In History’
President Trump unleashed a blistering attack on New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the growing influence of democratic socialists within the Democratic Party during remarks delivered Thursday at the Faith & Freedom Coalition’s Road to Majority conference.
The president pointed to recent victories by candidates backed by the Democratic Socialists of America and warned that the movement represents a serious threat to the country’s future if left unchecked.
Trump reserved some of his sharpest criticism for Mamdani, accusing the New York mayor of embracing policies that would damage the city’s economy and undermine property rights. The president specifically criticized Mamdani’s support for a rent freeze on nearly one million rent-stabilized apartments throughout the city.
According to Trump, forcing landlords to absorb rising costs for taxes, maintenance, insurance, and utilities without the ability to adjust rents would ultimately discourage investment and lead to a decline in housing quality throughout New York.
Mocking socialist economic policies, Trump joked that he could become “the greatest communist in history” if he simply promised voters free benefits and government handouts without regard for the long-term consequences.
The president argued that communist and socialist policies may initially sound appealing to voters but eventually result in economic decline, reduced investment, and lower living standards. He pointed to historical examples from around the world as evidence that such systems ultimately fail.
Trump also highlighted recent primary victories by candidates aligned with Mamdani and the Democratic Socialists of America, warning conservatives that the movement is becoming increasingly influential in major cities and within the Democratic Party itself.
Speaking to a largely religious and conservative audience, Trump described the rise of socialist politics as both an economic and cultural challenge, arguing that the movement stands in direct opposition to many traditional American values.
The remarks come as Republicans increasingly seek to make socialism and progressive economic policies a central issue heading into the 2026 midterm elections, particularly in response to recent gains by left-wing candidates in New York and other large metropolitan areas.
