Trump Suggests Major 2020 Implications If SPLC Fraud Allegations Proven
President Donald Trump weighed in on the federal charges facing the Southern Poverty Law Center early Friday, arguing that the case could have broader political implications, including questions surrounding the 2020 election.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump called the organization “one of the greatest political scams in American history” following news that it had been charged with multiple counts of wire fraud. The charges stem from an indictment unsealed earlier this week by the United States Department of Justice.
“The Southern Poverty Law Center… has been charged with FRAUD,” Trump wrote. “If it is true, the 2020 Presidential Election should be permanently wiped from the books and be of no further force or effect.”
The indictment alleges that the organization used donor funds to pay individuals affiliated with extremist groups, including members of the Ku Klux Klan and other white supremacist organizations, over a period spanning nearly a decade. Prosecutors claim more than $3 million was distributed to informants between 2014 and 2023.
One of those informants is alleged to have been involved in planning the 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, an event that turned deadly and became a major flashpoint in national politics.
The Southern Poverty Law Center, founded in the 1970s to combat racism and extremism, has long been influential in shaping public discourse around hate groups. Critics have argued that its classifications have at times extended beyond fringe organizations to include mainstream political figures and movements.
Trump also referenced scrutiny surrounding ActBlue, which has faced allegations related to campaign finance practices. He linked both issues in his post while reiterating his long-standing claim that the 2020 election outcome was flawed.
The case against the Southern Poverty Law Center is expected to proceed through the courts, where prosecutors will need to prove the allegations laid out in the indictment. The organization has not yet publicly responded in detail to the charges.
While Trump’s comments introduce a political dimension to the case, any legal findings will be determined through the judicial process as the investigation continues.
