Trump to Meet Mamdani at Gracie Mansion During New York Visit

President Trump is scheduled to meet with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani at Gracie Mansion on Monday as the president travels to New York for the United Nations General Assembly. The White House has confirmed the meeting, which will focus on issues affecting New York City and its residents.

The meeting will mark the first time Mamdani has hosted President Trump at Gracie Mansion, the official residence of New York City’s mayor. It also represents the latest face-to-face discussion between two political figures who have significant ideological differences but have maintained an ongoing dialogue since Mamdani took office.

President Trump and Mamdani previously met at the White House following Mamdani’s election and held another meeting in February centered largely on housing. During that meeting, Mamdani pushed for greater federal investment in New York City’s housing supply.

Despite their political differences, their relationship has at times been more cordial than expected. Trump has previously described his interactions with Mamdani positively, while the mayor has said he is willing to work with the administration when cooperation could benefit New Yorkers.

The two have nevertheless clashed publicly on several major issues. Mamdani has criticized Trump administration policies and previously used harsh language to describe Trump, while the president and other Republicans have repeatedly criticized Mamdani’s democratic socialist agenda.

One major disagreement has involved Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Mamdani previously pledged during his mayoral campaign that Netanyahu could be arrested if he entered New York City, while President Trump rejected the idea and defended the Israeli leader. Mamdani has since acknowledged legal limitations on his authority to carry out such an arrest.

Housing could again emerge as an important subject Monday. Mamdani has made affordability and housing construction central parts of his administration, including his campaign promise to freeze rents for roughly one million New Yorkers living in rent-stabilized apartments.

The meeting comes during a particularly busy week for President Trump in New York. The president is expected to participate in the United Nations General Assembly and hold meetings with foreign leaders as international attention remains focused on the conflict with Iran and other major foreign policy issues.

Trump is also preparing for Chinese President Xi Jinping’s upcoming U.S. state visit. American and Chinese officials are already holding talks in New York covering trade, artificial intelligence and critical minerals ahead of the meeting between the two leaders.

Monday’s Gracie Mansion meeting will give President Trump and Mamdani another opportunity to discuss areas where the federal government and New York City could cooperate despite their political disagreements. Neither side has released a detailed agenda beyond saying the discussion will center on matters affecting the city and its residents.
