Trump Unveils $22.5 Billion Plan To Transform Dulles Airport
President Donald Trump announced a sweeping $22.5 billion modernization plan for Washington Dulles International Airport on Wednesday, calling it one of the largest airport redevelopment projects in American history and pledging to turn the aging facility into a world-class gateway for travelers.
The centerpiece of the project is the elimination of Dulles’ iconic mobile lounges, commonly known as the “people movers,” which have transported passengers between the main terminal and concourses since the airport opened in 1962. President Trump criticized the system as outdated and inefficient, saying travelers deserve a faster and more modern airport experience. The people movers will be replaced by expanded underground train service, pedestrian tunnels, and moving walkways connecting the terminals.
The overhaul also includes five new terminals connected by glass walkways, a massive 32,000-space parking garage, expanded check-in and security areas, additional hotels, restaurants, retail space, and roughly five million square feet of new or renovated airport facilities. President Trump said the project will preserve the airport’s iconic main terminal, designed by renowned architect Eero Saarinen, while dramatically expanding its capacity for future growth.
President Trump said he took a personal interest in the redesign, reviewing architectural proposals and insisting on changes before approving the final plan. He described the current airport as outdated and said the United States should have airports that rival the best in the world. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy joined the president during the announcement and praised the project as a long-overdue investment in the nation’s infrastructure.
United Airlines, Dulles’ largest carrier, is expected to play a major role in financing the project alongside the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority through municipal bonds and other funding sources. Construction is expected to begin next spring, with officials estimating the transformation will take approximately two years to complete.
The airport redevelopment is part of President Trump’s broader effort to modernize the nation’s capital and improve major transportation infrastructure. Supporters say the project will reduce congestion, improve the passenger experience, and strengthen Dulles’ position as one of America’s premier international airports for decades to come.
