Ukraine Says Sea Drone Destroyed Russian Drone Boat in Historic Black Sea Battle
Ukraine says one of its armed naval drones destroyed a Russian unmanned vessel in the Black Sea in what Ukrainian officials are calling the first recorded battle between two uncrewed naval vessels.
Ukraine’s Navy released dramatic video footage of the encounter Saturday, showing an unmanned Ukrainian vessel opening fire on what officials identified as a Russian naval drone. The operation was conducted jointly by the Ukrainian Navy and the country’s military intelligence service.
According to Ukrainian officials, military intelligence units first detected the Russian unmanned surface vessel operating in the Black Sea. Ukraine then deployed a Sargan-3000 naval drone to intercept it.
The Sargan-3000 was equipped with a remotely operated Protector weapons station armed with a 12.7mm machine gun. Video released by Ukraine appears to show the Ukrainian vessel maneuvering toward its target and repeatedly firing before the Russian craft is destroyed.
Ukraine described the encounter as the first naval engagement in which one unmanned surface vessel directly fought and destroyed another. Independent reporting had not confirmed the exact location or date of the engagement, and Russia had not immediately provided its own detailed account of the incident.

The encounter represents another development in the rapidly expanding use of unmanned weapons during the Russia-Ukraine war. Both countries have increasingly relied on drones for reconnaissance and attacks on troops, infrastructure, military installations and ships.
Ukraine has invested heavily in naval drones since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in 2022. The relatively inexpensive unmanned vessels have allowed Ukrainian forces to threaten Russian naval assets across the Black Sea without placing sailors aboard conventional warships.
Those operations have helped reshape the naval conflict. Ukraine has used sea drones and other weapons to strike Russian vessels and facilities, while Russia has increasingly sought new methods of detecting and destroying the unmanned craft before they reach their targets.
The latest encounter suggests the competition is entering another phase, with armed naval drones potentially being used not only to attack conventional ships and coastal targets but also to hunt and destroy opposing unmanned vessels.
The development comes amid intensified fighting across Ukraine and the Black Sea region. Russian forces carried out widespread strikes across Ukraine on Saturday, while both sides have continued targeting shipping and infrastructure as the war stretches further into its fifth year.
